Emily Martinello
August 2014
After Emily Martinello was in a major car accident in November 2012, she joined the CGC to build up strength while working with an Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist. “For a long time after my accident, I felt like a victim- weak, fragile, and vulnerable. It took 6 months to get back to being able to exercise, and two more months to find the right gym and program for me.” Emily had to start very slowly, but her perseverance has paid off – she has progressed from only being able to walk slowly for 10 minutes every other day to running the Bluenose 10K. “My progress has been slow and steady, but it's mine and I'm proud of it. Even after a year, I'm still on a modified program, slowly working up to a few machines- but each time I get to add a new one into my routine, I am thrilled- it's a huge accomplishment for me!” Emily says it’s little victories and the welcoming atmosphere at the CGC that motivates her. “I am so grateful to the team at the CGC-- the staff always seem happy to see me, and have found reasons to celebrate my successes with me-- they are excited when I can lift more weight, gain range of motion, or run an extra kilometre…I can see progress almost weekly. Each visit, I feel motivated by something new, whether it's moving up five pounds, or finally hitting full range of motion with the free weights, or nailing 10 squats in a row.” We are so happy to be a small part of your success story Emily – and best of luck with your next goal to complete a Half Marathon next November!
