Our Biggest Bite Yet
Food Run 2017 - Sunday, October 15th
October 20, 2017
For most of us, we start to wonder what’s for dinner around 4pm every day. We think about ingredients on-hand and whether we need to pick something up, or whether we opt for takeout because it’s easy. While we have these options, many Nova Scotians do not. In 2016, Food Banks Canada reported that 23,840 Nova Scotians accessed a Food Bank and usage in Nova Scotia had increased by 40.9% since 2008.
On October 15th, 2017, Canada Games Centre celebrated its fifth Food Run and the 35,700 meals that event participants have provided to children, adults and families in our communities over the years. This year’s Food Run saw 1,131 registered participants help us donate 1,788kg of food and $4,814 in cash donations to FEED NOVA SCOTIA.
“Year after year, this event reminds us what an incredible community we live in,” said Karen Theriault at FEED NOVA SCOTIA. “The staff and volunteers at Canada Games Centre pour their heart and soul into organizing the event, and the community responds with such incredible spirit and generosity. Once again, they’ve made a huge difference in helping us to reduce hunger in our communities, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.”
The Food Run continues to feature a 2.5km/5km walk/run and Community Festival for free with a food or cash donation to FEED NOVA SCOTIA. Participants of the 2017 Food Run also enjoyed delicious smoothies and chocolate milk courtesy of Booster Juice and Agropur; were treated to individualized messages on their coffee cups by Starbucks; and topped the morning off with a slice of pumpkin or apple pie. Any leftover pie was donated to Metro Turning Point and Barry House.
